The New Joey Umbilical Safety System is a patented umbilical safety
system that simultaneously cuts and clamps the maternal and infant
sides of the umbilical cord while leaving the Joey clamp, which has a
playful koala bear face design, on the infant. It also retains a
portion of the cord and blood for ease of content analysis by hospital
laboratories. It is FDA approved. It is now manufactured in Europe
and has a CE Class IIa certification. Strict manufacturing standards
also allow for a three year shelf life.
The Joey Umbilical Safety System actually redefines the market for umbilical cord work in the delivery room.

The Joey Clamp & Cutter is now available from The Utopia Group, LLC, under an exclusive license.
After a baby is born the umbilical cord is cut to separate the baby from the mother. Currently, the clinician clamps off the infant side of the umbilical cord using a hemostat or a plastic umbilical cord clamp. Then the clinician "milks" the umbilical cord, forcing as much blood as possible out of the umbilical cord and into the placenta. Another plastic clamp or hemostat is then placed near the first clamp and scissors are used to cut the cord in between the two clamps, creating blood spray exposure. A nurse then draws blood from the placenta to send to the lab, creating additional blood spray exposure, as well as exposure to needle sticks.
The Joey Umbilical Safety System completely replaces this long established methodology and the various pieces of equipment that must be used in it. Designed with an emphasis on ease of use and safety, the Joey Umbilical Safety System clamps and cuts the umbilical cord in one motion while shielding the delivery team from blood spray. The cutting chamber has been designed to keep a piece of the umbilical cord, from which the lab can directly extract blood for testing and from which stem cells can be saved. In summary, the Joey Umbilical Safety System is quicker, safer and more economical than the current traditional method. In addition, the baby is left with the playful koala bear face on the baby's belly button, which the mother can take home as a memento.
The Joey Umbilical Safety System has won three design awards including the IDEA/BusinessWeek Gold Award 2003, the Medical Design Excellence Gold Award 2003, and the ID Magazine Design Distinction Award 2002. The Joey Umbilical Safety System is the first of our fully developed products and this recognition increases the ability of the Partnership to attract premier licensing partners for the product by emphasizing the added branding potential for Joey Umbilical Safety System.
